What FFMI Measures

Fat-free mass index (FFMI) works like BMI, but uses only your lean mass: everything that isn't fat, including muscle, bone, organs and water. That makes it far better than BMI at telling a muscular person apart from someone carrying extra fat.

Lean mass (kg) = weight (kg) × (1 − body fat % ÷ 100)
FFMI = lean mass ÷ height (m)²
Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m)

The normalized value adjusts for height, since taller people tend to score slightly lower. It is the number usually compared against benchmarks.

FFMI Benchmarks (Men)

Normalized FFMIWhat it usually means
Under 18Below average muscle mass
18–20Average
20–22Above average; regular training
22–25Highly muscular; years of dedicated training
Over 25Rare without performance-enhancing drugs in the 1995 study

These bands are a rough guide built around the Kouri et al. (1995) findings. Women typically score about 3 to 5 points lower at a similar training level.

FFMI depends on your body fat number

An error of a few points in body fat shifts FFMI noticeably. Use the same body fat method each time, and treat the result as a trend tracker rather than a verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good FFMI?

For men, an FFMI around 18 to 20 is typical of untrained or lightly trained people, and 20 to 23 reflects consistent strength training. In the Kouri et al. (1995) study, the average among non-steroid-using athletes was about 20. Women typically run several points lower.

Is an FFMI of 25 the natural limit?

In the 1995 study, few men who had never used steroids scored above a normalized FFMI of about 25, so it is often quoted as a natural ceiling. It is a useful benchmark from one sample, not a hard biological limit.

Why use FFMI instead of BMI?

BMI counts all body weight the same, so muscular people can be labeled overweight. FFMI removes fat mass first, giving a better picture of how much muscle you carry for your height.

How accurate is my FFMI?

FFMI is only as accurate as your body fat estimate. A few points of error in body fat can shift FFMI by about one point, so use the same method each time and watch the trend.

Muscular and Labeled “Overweight” by BMI?

Waist-to-height ratio shows whether your weight is muscle or belly fat. It's what the military now uses.
